I just finished watching Children Of Earth for the second time and i really love Jack Harkness. (Take note I’ve only seen the tv series and a few random audio story lines.)
The dude is funny as hell, his introductory line “Excellent bottom.” ? Iconic. A pansexual icon.
Ask any of my close friends who i spout off to about torchwood and they know that i think the guy is brilliant. But he has done alot of bad shit, that said, none of it , save maybe the conman bit, was done with the intent of it being bad. He let the 456 take 12 children in 1965 to save the rest of the population. His grandson was killed to save the rest of that 10% population. Its a bit of a ‘do the ends justify the means’ situation. I’m not cheering on those deaths but how else could it have been done. People look at him like its his fault and so does he but he is doing the best he can to save as many lives as he can.
Jack: “Why choose me?”
Gov. Lady: “Because you don’t care.”
But the thing is he does care, at every death, no matter how seemingly unimportant he shows such compassion. The space whale from ‘Meat’ for example, all he wants to do is save it. He cried when Estell died, along with Owen, Tosh, Ianto, his grandson and countless others. Despite being seen as someone who “doesn’t care.”, he has alot of love to give.
When he leaves at the end of CoE, he seems to be painted in a somewhat selfish light like ‘How could you leave, we need you.’, wouldn’t that be exactly what you would do? He was probably 35, 40 maybe, give or take when he was given immortality, then he spent 2150+ years on earth, putting up with its crap, trying to make it a better place and waiting for help. ~2000 of those years were spent in a grave for something he didn’t intentionally do. He has done alot in his abnormally long life, and that’s only the first 2000 years, who knows what he got up to in the years between then and his death as the Face of Boe.
TLDR: Jack Harkness has had a long and hard [ 😉 ] life and deserves a break
