I wanted to bring awareness to something that has a lot of misconceptions: PTSD.
What is PTSD?
Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event.
A common misconception is that you have to have been through a war in order to have PTSD. Yes, while war veterans often have PTSD, PTSD can come from anything. PTSD comes from trauma. Anything can be traumatic. Anyone can have PTSD for any kind of reason.
I’m also sick and tired of seeing people use the word trigger as a joke. You know the type. The whole “#triggered lol” thing.
What is a trigger?
A trigger is something that sets off a memory tape or flashback transporting the person back to the event of the original trauma.
It is not
Something that offends you
A joke
Trigger warnings are important. They’re there for a reason. You can take extra minutes out of your day to post trigger warnings. Oh and if you call someone a special snowflake for needing them? Grow up.
