//I think because of a number of reasons actually! (And I don’t take it as hate, no worries <333 ) I’m actually really glad someone asked this, I’ve been meaning to articulate it.
–The step in the right direction that is a female Doctor, allowing thousands of little girls to identify with the chief protagonist of one of the most central sci fi franchises of all time.
–The sense that whereas Twelve (understandably) hit a rock bottom of disillusionment, solitude, and depression, Thirteen represents his resolve to regenerate “one more time” and press forward into a HOPEFUL future. Thirteen very much emblematizes HOPE to me.
–I love Jodie Whittaker as an actor. I’ve already seen her in Return To Cranford and Broadchurch, and I’ve seen interviews and clips of her in other things, and she’s just this dorky jovial sweetheart who’s amazingly good at a breadth of roles.
–The pairing of Thirteen with Chris Chibnall’s writing (I’m a big fan).
–Thirteen reminds me of my long-standing first and favorite Doctor, Ten, who presents a similarly zesty childlike enthusiasm….but without Ten’s dangerous arrogant streak and propensity to accidentally use people. Ten and Simm are really matched as a DoctorXMaster pairing, just like Twelve and Missy are, so it makes me happy to see some remnant of that era continuing.
–Personal significance: her character arose into being right after A) my favorite character “died” and regenerated and I had to come to terms with the fact that, unless they take John Simm up on his recent offer to return to the show once again, he’s never coming back, and B) I lost a crucial friendship in this fandom and felt about as rock-bottom as Twelve. Thirteen being a fresh new part of this beloved series started to symbolize for me the fact that the future does hold good things; not all joy exists merely in a lost past. ❤
